One of the many practices that are popular among hedge witchcraft is riding the hedge between the physical and ethereal planes. Hedge witches work closely with the spiritual plane to guide them and aid in their magickal works. There are many ways to ride the hedge, or so to speak, and many different cultures and forms of magick utilize the many ways of riding the hedge.
One way is to go on a vision quest. A vision quest is a rite of passage in some Native American cultures. The ceremony of the Vision Quest is one of the most universal and ancient means to find spiritual guidance and purpose. A Vision Quest can provide deep understanding of one’s life purpose. A traditional Native American Vision Quest consists of a person spending one to four days and nights secluded in nature. This provides time for deep communion with the fundamental forces and spiritual energies of creation and self-identity. During this time of intense spiritual communication a person can receive profound insight into themselves and the world. This insight, typically in the form of a dream of Vision, relates directly to their purpose and destiny in life. In many Native American groups the vision quest is a turning point in life taken to find oneself and the intended spiritual and life direction. The Vision Quest is often used as a Rite of Passage, marking the transition between childhood and full acceptance into society as an adult. A person’s first Vision Quest is typically done during their transformative teenage years. When an older child is ready, he will go on a personal, spiritual quest alone in the wilderness, often in conjunction with a period of fasting. This usually lasts for a number of days while the child is attuned to the spirit world. Usually, a Guardian animal or force of nature will come in a vision or dream and give guidance for the child’s life. A Vision Quest helps the teenager to access spiritual communication and form complex abstract thoughts. Through this Rite of Passage the child becomes an adult, taking responsibility for themselves and their individual contribution to a healthy society.
Another form of hedge riding is lucid dreaming. A lucid dream is any dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming. A lucid dream can begin in one of many ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream (D.I.L.D.) starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually concludes it is a dream. A wake-initiated lucid dream (W.I.L.D) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state, with no apparent lapse in consciousness. The wake-initiated lucid dream occurs when the sleeper enters REM sleep with unbroken self-awareness directly from the waking state. The dream world is just another plane of existence and by engaging in lucid dreaming, whether by accident or consciously, you are working that particular plane of existence. A lot of times you can manipulate your lucid dream to manifest things on the physical plane. Lucid dreaming shows up in many cultures and/or religious paths. It isn’t associated with any path in itself so basically, anyone can do it.
Another form of hedge riding is astral projection. Astral projection (or astral travel) is an interpretation of out-of-body experience that assumes the existence of an “astral body” separate from the physical body and capable of travelling outside it. Astral projection or travel denotes the astral body leaving the physical body to travel in an astral plane. The idea of astral travel is rooted in common worldwide religious accounts of the afterlife in which the consciousness’ or soul’s journey or “ascent” is described in such terms as “an… out-of body experience, wherein the spiritual traveler leaves the physical body and travels in his/her subtle body (or dream-body or astral body) into ‘higher’ realms.” It is frequently reported in association with dreams, drug experiences and forms of meditation. Astral projection is definitely one of my favorite forms of hedge riding. It’s not something that should be played with lightly so if you are interested in performing astral travel please do more research and really understand what it is you are doing before you attempt to do it.
The last form, at least that I know of, of hedge riding is spirit communication. This includes quija boards, scrying, seances or any other method for contacting the dead. I have known some people that communicate with spirits by actually visiting the different spiritual planes through astral travel. This is another method that shouldn’t be played with. You really need to do know what you’re doing because if you don’t do things exactly how they should be done you may welcome something into your home that you don’t want there. When riding the hedge you open a door that works both ways. Just like you can travel to different planes of existence, other beings can travel into your plane of existence. So, it’s very important to make sure your area is protected and that you know what you’re doing.
So, this was just a brief blog to explain some of the ways to ride the hedge. I’m sure there are many other ways to do it but these are the ones I know the best. Hope it gave you all some insight and maybe you can go try it for yourself! Happy riding witches!
